Acer Aspire VX 15 Review

Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor

The Acer Aspire VX 15 is powered by the Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad core processor. Acer Aspire VX 15 right sideAs this is a 2017-released processor, it comes with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a new high-end CPU like multi-monitor support, VR-readiness, 3D support and fast speeds. The i7-7700HQ’s processor base frequency is 2.80GHz while the max turbo frequency is a whopping 3.8GHz; it also has a 6MB CPU cache for an extra speed boost.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti dedicated graphics

The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti dedicated graphics from NVDIA that come with the Aspire VX 15 feature Pascal architecture, the most advanced GPU architecture on the planet. With Pascal, you get a huge performance boost. For instance, with GTX 1050 Ti, performance on Grand Theft Auto V is almost 2x better than previous GTX generations. The relative boost clock with the GTX 1050 Ti graphics is 1.3x; it has a 4GB GDDR5 frame buffer and features a memory speed of 7Gbps.

This Acer option comes preloaded with 16GB of DDR4 RAM. If you haven’t upgraded in a while, the thing you need to know about DDR4 is it’s faster and more energy efficient than previous RAM generations, which exactly the sort of RAM you need in a good gaming laptop.

As for amount of RAM, 16GB is still considered the perfect number as of 2017. You can run any modern game on Ultra with 16GB of RAM, provided the rest of your specs are up to snuff. There are those who say more is better, but most experts agree 16GB is the sweet spot and later, if you do need more, upgrading is easy.

256GB SSD storage plus optional complementary HDD kit

The Aspire VX 15 comes complete with 256GB SSD storage. Acer Aspire VX 15 left sideFor those unfamiliar with SSD storage, think of it as a bunch of powerful flash drives that have replaced your hard drive. They’re faster, stronger and better. Unlike HDD storage, they aren’t prone to random failure, either, so it’s just a more secure option. The one downside is the newness of the technology makes them more expensive per gigabyte, hence this model only coming with 256GB SSD storage when most gamers are probably used to 2TB HDD storage or more. For those who save most of their data in the cloud, 256GB of SSD is plenty. However, for those who wish to have HDD storage as well, Acer offers an optional complementary HDD upgrade kit for users who wish to have HDD. If you want to add an HDD drive without going out of pocket, I highly recommend taking them up on the offer, because it’s a sweet deal and you wind up with hybrid storage in the process.

Studio-quality sound system

The Acer Aspire VX 15 prides itself on its studio-like sound system. For improved audio, it uses a combination of Acer TrueHarmony and Dolby Audio Premium. Crisp sounds are crisper. Growls are grumblier. Everything about this sound setup is designed to be more cinematic and plunge you deeper into game immersion.

First impression

The Acer Aspire VX 15 looks like a racing car but in laptop form with its brash red accents that make you strangely want to succeed in everything you do in-game.

Performance-wise, a lot can be said for the use of the Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor. You’ll find them a lot in the newer gaming laptops and there’s a reason for that: speed, reliability, performance, versatility. The i7-7700HQ supports heavy-duty multitasking without batting an eyelash. And if you’re a modder or a 3D modeler, this will be music to your ears, because it really helps in that regard to have a processor as speedy and multitasking-ready as this one.

The graphics are great. NVIDIA never disappoints and their GTX 1050 Ti graphics with Pascal architecture are no exception. With speed boost and increased overall performance, you don’t experience game lag or any other annoying glitches you may have with past iterations. All of the components on this laptop play well together.

The dual fans are much touted. Cooling-wise, I had no problems. Now, we all know cooling gets more difficult as the machine ages, so time will be the true test there. That said, most of us have a spare fan lying around, so that’s not really an issue.

The sound system lives up to the hype. It’s very immersive. When you factor that into the visuals, you come out with a really cool gaming laptop.

The Acer Aspire VX 15 gaming laptop is covered by a 1-year limited warranty with a 90-day warranty on software.

The Acer Aspire VX 15 gaming laptop is aptly named, because it makes you aspire to game more, thanks to its likeable graphics and sound system combo which immensely aid in gaming immersion.
