FUGOO Tough Bluetooth Speaker Review

The FUGOO Tough is exactly what the name suggests: A tougher version of its sister FUGOO portable Bluetooth speakers. It’s designed for those who are not only sporty, but require extreme ruggedness in their portable speaker—on top of quality sound.

Features

Extremely rugged design

The FUGOO Tough is the most rugged of the FUGOO wireless Bluetooth speaker lineup. Like its sister speakers, the FUGOO Tough is waterproof, dustproof, sandproof, snowproof and mudproof. fugoo tough sideHowever, the FUGOO Tough goes above and beyond that by being all that plus shockproof. It may sound like a small addition, but any active person knows that if you’ve got your speaker mounted on your bike, you’re going to need something that can handle all the ups and downs of rugged terrain—and take a lick, if it comes to that. For ruggedness and durability, the FUGOO Tough is made from fiber-reinforced resin and solid aluminum.

100% Waterproof

The FUGOO Tough portable Bluetooth speaker is 100% waterproof down to 3 feet and can last that way for a solid thirty minutes. The incursion rating is an impressive IP67. It may not sound like much, but if your speaker is going to be poolside, waterproofing of this caliber is rare in speakers of this class, making it a pretty nifty feature.

High fidelity sound

The Tough’s 360-degree high fidelity sound is thanks to its unique six-speaker setup—a FUGOO innovation.

There are two tweeters, two woofers, two passive radiators and four active drivers, all of which are tilted at an 8-degree angle to provide the best sound experience no matter where you’re at.

Super-long battery life

fugoo tough backThe FUGOO Tough’s battery life is a ultralong 40 hours when the volume is set to 50%. Even when you crank the volume to the max, you’re still going to have 20 hours of long-lasting music goodness, making it a great companion to take camping or on journeys where electricity is limited or unavailable.

Voice enabled speakerphone

Thanks to the high-quality full duplex speakerphone, and voice enabled action, you can activate both Google Now and Siri with just the sound of your voice. Check the weather, get the latest score for the game—even have a teleconference in the middle of nowhere, all in perfectly clear sound on your end and theirs.

First impression

You can tell the FUGOO Tough is designed for extra ruggedness by its looks alone. The fiber and aluminum reinforcements are clearly visible, and the speaker itself weighs slightly more than the other FUGOO speakers, albeit it is still ultralightweight at just 1.4lbs.fugoo tough backpack (This extra weight isn’t that noticeable until you compare them each in one hand as I did, by the way.)

Despite the extra toughening features, the sound on the FUGOO Tough is very nice with a full-bodied richness that most small speakers of this size can’t come close to matching.

It’s waterproof like the other FUGOO speakers, but the thing that makes the FUGOO Tough even more rugged is its shockproof capability. The mounts you can use to strap it to your bike and backpack are sturdy, but if you’re mountain biking with your speaker mountain, obviously the worst-case scenario is that it falls onto jagged rocks or something. While I didn’t go that far to test out the shockproofness, I did accidentally drop it on my patio and it was good as new.

Warranty

The FUGOO Tough is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Final verdict

FUGOO’s wireless Bluetooth speakers tend to be pretty rugged in general, but the FUGOO Tough kicks that feature up to eleven, thanks to ultradurable aluminum and fiber-reinforced construction. As for sound, you can’t beat it for a speaker of this size in fullness or, frankly, how far the sound carries outdoors. I highly recommend it.

Positives
  • 360-degree high fidelity audio
  • Omnidirectional mic
  • Voice-enabled speakerphone with voice-activated Google Now and Siri
  • 40-hour battery life at 50% volume
  • 100% waterproof down to three feet for thirty minutes
  • Weatherproof
  • Element-proof in general
  • Shockproof
  • Made from fiber-reinforced resin and aluminum for added durability and ruggedness
  • Can be mounted on bikes, backpacks and more

Negatives
  • Because of the small size of the speaker, sub-bass frequency will be suboptimal, unfortunately. However, this is a downsize inherent in 99% of ultra-small speakers out there, and when you weigh it against the fact that the bass tones are pretty solid, this issue isn’t too big.fugoo tough
